Plenary Speakers

Prof. Ken Haenen (Hasselt University, Belgium)

Ken Haenen, a Full Professor of Experimental Physics, is currently Vice-Rector Research, Valorisation, and Internationalisation at Hasselt University, Belgium, where he obtained his PhD degree in physics in 2002.
He is also a guest professor at IMEC, Belgium. Ken is Editor-in-Chief of Diamond and Related Materials, Section Editor of MethodsX (Materials Science), and an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports and Physica Status Solidi. He is involved in the organisation of several leading international diamond and nanocarbon conferences, including the International Conference on Diamond and Carbon Materials (Chair), Hasselt Diamond Workshop (Co-Chair), and New Diamond and Nano Carbons (Executive Committee). He has also organised MRS symposia on carbon functional interfaces at the 2011 and 2013 MRS Spring Meetings, served as a co-chair of the 2015 MRS Spring Meeting, and is currently the Chair of the MRS Program Development Subcommittee. Since 1997, Ken’s research interests focus on CVD diamond, including its deposition, optoelectronic characterisation, surface functionalisation, and diamond-based devices, as part of a broader scope on carbon materials for energy harvesting and conversion. To date, he has authored over 245 peer-reviewed publications.
Prof. Jin Zhang (Peking University, China)

Prof. Jin Zhang is a Professor at the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as the Vice-President of Peking University and the Chancellor of its Shenzhen Graduate School. He has also held key leadership roles in China's nanomaterials community. He is the Vice President of the Beijing Graphene Institute, Deputy Director of the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, and Director of the Beijing Engineering Research Center of Low Dimensional Carbon Materials. His research focuses on the controlled synthesis and optical spectroscopy of carbon nanomaterials, including the growth methodology of carbonene materials, preparation and application of carbonene fiber, the exploration of new carbon allotropes, and the optical spectroscopic study of carbon nanomaterials. To date, he has authored over 390 SCI publications in this field.
Prof. Hiroshi Kawarada (Waseda University, Japan)

Professor Hiroshi Kawarada received Doctor of Engineering from Waseda University (1985) and joined Osaka University as Assistant Professor (1986) where he started diamond research. Later, he worked in Waseda University as Associate Professor (1990) and Professor (1995-), where he developed C-H diamond FET in 1994. As Visiting Researcher he stayed in Fraunhofer Institute (IAF) by Fellowship of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1995-1996). As an organizer he served for European Conference on Diamond and Related Materials (1998-2008). In Japan, he also served for Japan Applied Physics Society as Board Member, New Diamond Forum as Chairman (2009-2014) and Science Council of Japan as Member. His research field is nanoelectronics, bioelectronics and power electronics using diamond, where he has 370 articles with 11,000 citations (Scopus).
Prof. Ruoff, Rodney S. (Ulsan Natl Inst Sci & Technol (UNIST), South Korea)

Prof. Ruoff, Rodney S. is a pioneer of carbon-based and other materials, and Director of the Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM, a UNIST IBS Center). He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1988, and was a Fulbright Fellow in 1988-1989 with the Max Planck Institute fuer Stroemungsforschung in Goettingen, Germany. Prior to joining the CMCM IBS Center located at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), he was a Cockrell Family Endowed Chair at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
